Oats and Gluten Contamination

Nearly all of the Coeliac / Celiac Sprue sites talk about Oats in the United States as being contaminated with Wheat. To date this has not been observed by us. Our son has had some quick reactions to wheat, barley and rye but never to a product that had Oats in it without declared wheat. In fact Jaden can eat Cap’n Crunch and Honeycomb cereal with no noted problems. I think the reason some Coeliacs have problems with Oats are based on the Avenin protein in Oats as opposed to any cross-contamination of wheat in the factory or field. Perhaps we have just been fortunate to not encounter contamination yet, but perhaps the contaminiation is not has likely as warned.  (Disclaimer: I would guess it is also possible a very minute amount of wheat gluten may not affect Jaden as much as a Coeliac.)

If you just recently found a problem with Gluten, you may consider experimenting with Oat containing products as long as you can recover from the reaction. Also there are some countries where wheat is not grown but oats are and in that case they are really sure of no contaminiation. Try a product of those countries to see if you react to the Avenin then you could try the USA Oats products. Reference.

Shay Update #6

Well I just got off the phone with the Doctor’s office. Shay’s echocardiogram came back normal, however the 24-hour monitor had not yet been “read”. So we are still left with some suspence. They said to try calling back tomorrow or Monday.

Shay Update #5

No Update….Well, when we called the Doctor’s office yesterday, the nurse said that the doctor was mistaken and the tests were going to take a week not 3 days.  We are to call back late next week.   Ughhh.

Family Fun

Today, we took it easy. We played and had fun as a family. Today was a glorious day. Plenty of sunshine and a light breeze. I thought we should fly kites, though when we arrived at my brothers the kids wanted to ride his Kubota instead. They had a blast. After playing they were thirsty. So we drank from the well on my brother’s property. (Great water.) Here is one of the pictures of Jaden getting his drink.jaden-drink.JPG

Cell Phone Coverage Update!!

Wow, my cell phone has 3-4 bars now when before it had none! Verizon has put up a cell tower in Berne and must have turned it on yesterday. I would suspect that the coverage will be up and down as they get it tuned in just right, but hey this is phenomally better than it was during my earlier post. Even though I have a Sprint phone, it roams on the Verizon network. I really didn’t care who put up the tower as either would bring coverage to my phone.

Shay’s Heart Update #4

Shay’s heart has slowed down. We saw a specialist today who told us that all of her blood tests came back normal. Always nice to hear that our child is not mal-nourished. Well he still would like to see the results of the 24-hour monitor and the echocardiogram but we won’t have those for a couple of days.

VISA IN HAND!!!

Praise the Lord our Visa has been granted! The package was delivered 2 hours after the normal mail came. We now have just under 13 weeks to get to Australia before the Visa needs to be filed again. Well we’ll see how God works this out.  We will need to have our funding wrapped up in less then 8 weeks to secure the tickets and get the few items shipped. Plus we need to pack up our house in Florida and get it ready to rent, more on that later.  Right now we are celebrating.

Visa Suspense Part Deux

Our passport package did not arrive today. It should have been sent overnight on Monday. Well it may have not actually gone into the system until Tuesday, which means we may not get it until Tomorrow as the USPS says “usually 1 day” and small towns may be out of the “usually” category . I guess it could still be here in Berne today, but the mail has already come. Hmmm… If I don’t see it tomorrow I will need to contact the Australian Embassy. Update: It came.

Shay Update #3

Shay is her normal bouncy self today. She said, “I must be better since I can do a cartwheel and it doesn’t hurt.” We had the echocardiogram today. My guess is that it won’t show anything. Perhaps it will. Anyway she is much better, no pain and her heartrate is 90-100, which can be considered normal for her age. My prayer is that we would actually know what happened. We took the 24-hour monitor off today just before the echocardiogram. My guess is also that it may not help much. We’ll see tomorrow at 3 or 4.

Visa Suspense

Nothing in the mail today. USPS Express Mail can be considered 1 or 2 day especially when it comes to getting it to a small town. So I guess we will find out tomorrow. Perhaps we will know lots tomorrow between Shay and the Visa. All in His timing.
